“I am inspired by the shapes and colours that surround me. My paintings usually express my desire to play with form, as well as to explore my love of texture and layering within the colour. I can spend quite a lot of time on one canvas, layering and carving into the paint, letting the images slowly emerge.”

Jessamyn is an abstract painter living in North Vancouver. She has been involved in the arts in one form or another from an early age, being a former drummer and trained actor holding a diploma in Theatre Arts from Grant MacEwan University.  Jessamyn found early on that she was craving an art form that would get her hands a little dirtier, so moved into working with clay and hand building, learning to explore texture and shape. From there, Jessamyn landed on her favourite expressive art form; painting.

Over the years and after enjoying several abstract and acrylic painting workshops at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Jessamyn has developed her style which is largely built on texture and colour.

“I am drawn to open space as well as form on the canvas, as this is equally important to me. Finding the unique balance of both, letting the images have their ‘homes’, while the story unveils itself as the eye travels around the work.  And of course, I express myself best with bright, vibrant colours. They fill me with joy and a sense of whimsical fun. ‘Finding Play’ is the title of this exhibit because that is exactly what I do when I paint, I am accessing a childlike freedom that is best expressed in colour and shape.”

She is now often commissioned to create large, mixed media paintings that are brightly coloured, playful and often inspired by the fascinating shapes found in the unlikeliest of places.  Patched roadways, multi textured sidewalks, rock walls and even playgrounds are all natural inspirations for Jessamyn’s work.  She was last seen on the North Shore presenting her artwork in the North Vancouver Art Council’s 2017 Art in the Garden.
